How to cure a UTI in cats
We had another scare with Lili this week.
The day did not start well. If it wasn’t bad enough that my alarm clock didn’t wake me up on time, Tuesday morning I woke up to discover that Lili had wet the bed. She had another UTI. UGH! I immediately put my “natural healer hat” on and started pulling out the homeopathy blends and herbal medicines I use when this happens. I also put Rich on alert for any behavior that may indicate Lili’s kidneys were shutting down like extreme thirst, lack of appetite, and lethargy. We’ve already been down that path twice, and thankfully she bounced back. She had a great appetite at breakfast and took all her meds. Rich kept me updated throughout the day while I was at work, and so far she seemed to be ok.
Traditional homeopathy
That afternoon I had a phone consultation with a veterinary homeopath up in Denver that I had met a year and a half ago on a trip to the Boulder area. We were actually discussing a respiratory issue that Rocket is dealing with, which is another long story I won’t go into now. I left work with my instructions for Rocket’s remedy which I picked up at Whole Foods and headed home. Like a song that’s stuck in your head, I felt compelled to research a single remedy of homeopathy vs the blends I have been using for Lili. I did not give her the meds with dinner that she had been taking that day, and yes, I felt a bit scared. What if I get it wrong? What if her kidneys start to shut down again? I pushed these thoughts aside and followed my intuition. It was SO compelling…like being guided down a dark hallway with your eyes closed but a friend is telling you to “trust me.”
In search of a cure
It didn’t take long to find a couple of resources on homeopathy and feline UTI and FLUTD (feline lower urinary tract disease). I cross-checked this with a homeopathy guide I keep on hand from Dr. Richard Pitcairn, DVM, an expert in homeopathy, and got very excited. Cantharis is very effective in treating urinary and kidney issues. Hmmmm…this sounded very familiar…did I have some upstairs in the bathroom drawer with all the other natural medicines I keep on hand? I ran upstairs to look. Sure enough, it was the last little Boiron tube I picked up! (I can’t even remember why I bought it to begin with!) I muscle-tested Lili for it, and it was a strong yes! I was probably holding my breath as I dissolved three little pellets in 1/4 cup of water. I squirted a 1/2 ml with a syringe into her mouth and said a prayer.

The next morning we did not find any wet spots in bed, so that was already a bonus. I muscle tested her to see if she needed another dose of her remedy. She did. She had a great appetite, too, trying to clean everyone’s bowls. Rich said she played during the day and acted completely normal. Yay! But I was not ready to celebrate just yet… At dinner I re-tested her again to see she if needed another dose. No! I re-tested again JUST to be sure. NO! I muscle tested her previous meds to see if she needed any of those. NO! I was just stunned…and elated…and blown away all at the same time! What normally took three weeks to clear up took two doses! In this case, the single homeopathic remedy was THE RIGHT CHOICE! And her kidneys were spared further compromise.
Final thoughts
